A Scenic Hike on Zeus’ Sacred Mountain
Just a few kilometers outside Heraklion, an easy and rewarding hike awaits you on the legendary Mount Juktas (Greek: Γιούχτας – Giouhtas). With its distinctive human-head shape, this mountain was an incredibly sacred site for the Minoans. According to legend, it represents the face of Zeus, the king of the gods, and is believed to be his tomb. In fact, the name Juktas originates from the Latin Jupiter, the Roman name for Zeus.
Standing at 811 meters (2,660 ft) high, the hike to the summit is relatively easy and offers breathtaking panoramic views. The trail crosses the mountain from one side to the other, revealing a stunning landscape. From the peak, where the Church of Lord Christ proudly stands, you can take in sweeping views of Mount Ida (Psiloritis), the Dikti mountain range, the picturesque village of Archanes with its lush vineyards and olive groves, the city of Heraklion, and even the island of Dia!
But Juktas is not just about history and views—it’s also a haven for wildlife and nature lovers. Keep an eye on the sky, and you might spot the majestic Griffon Vultures (Gyps Fulvus) soaring gracefully in search of food. The mountain is also rich in aromatic herbs and unique flora, making it a delightful experience for all senses.
If you’re looking for a hike that blends history, mythology, and breathtaking scenery, Mount Juktas is the perfect adventure for you!
