Hiking Mt. Ida – Psiloritis

Reaching Timios Starvos summit at 2456m altitude.

The Ida Mountain Range, better known as Psiloritis, is home to Crete’s highest peak, Timios Stavros (2,456m). This awe-inspiring massif, designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark, stretches across the island’s central region, blending raw natural beauty with deep historical significance.

In ancient times, Psiloritis was revered as a sacred mountain, inspiring myths and legends. The most famous tale tells of Zeus’ birth in the mystical Ideon Andron, a cave hidden on its eastern slopes—one of Crete’s most legendary sites.

For adventurers seeking to conquer the summit of Timios Stavros, multiple trails offer different challenges. One of the best routes is the northern trail, starting from the Mygeros Plateau (1,670m). This steep and rocky 3km ascent winds its way up the rugged landscape, ultimately leading to the chapel of Timios Stavros (Holy Cross) at the peak. Though demanding, the three-hour climb rewards hikers with breathtaking panoramic views stretching across Crete, from the sea to the distant mountains.

The descent follows the same path back to the plateau and is significantly faster (about two hours)—a perfect opportunity to reflect on the exhilarating journey.
